Salukis win!

Time to recap the weekend…it was a good one.

We flash back to Friday, where Jake and I get done with Sunrise sports at 1:30. Considering that we had four volunteers…it was good. What wasn’t good was the leaving at 7:00 the next day.

Since I wanted to listen to the show live, for the first time ever, I decided to wake up at 5:30, shower, and eat breakfast while listening to the show. It sounded really good, I was impressed. (Can you be impressed with your own show? I am.)

The downside is, I didn’t get to sleep until 2:30, so there’s three hours of sleep. I wind up being navigator so I’m awake for the trip up to Bloomington.

The trip was an…interesting one. we’ll leave it at that.

We arrive in Bloomington with pleanty of time before the game. Because of bad traffic, we end up parking four blocks away. Oy veh. Not a bad walk, but still, its not exactly McAndrew. Jake and I finally figure out where to go, and we get up to the press box.

The press box is huge. Two rows of seats all across. It was very nice.

As for the game, its amazing. Southern starts out down 14-0, and it looks like its going to be a long day. Then, Southern forces a turnover and gains a little momentum on offense, and end up cutting the lead in half just before halftime.

Then the Saluki offense just explodes. After giving up a touchdown, Southern rallies for two scores and a 21-21 lead. Another big defensive stand and the Salukis have the ball again. Nick Hill finds with fourth different reciever for a TD and Southern leads 28-21.

Not to be outdone, IU drives down the field and scores to tie the score. As the crowd gets into it, Hill gets drilled as he releases the football. Somehow, the reciever catches the ball, first down.

A few plays later, again Hill gets whacked as he throws the ball, but the reciever makes an amazing over the shoulder catch, and the Salukis are in business. Then Arkee Whitlock takes it right up the middle for a score, 35-28 SIU.

IU wound up going for it on 4th down at midfield, and didn’t convert. Southern had to punt, but pinned the Hoosiers inside the five (special teams matter!) and the clock would wind down. Southern wins 35-28.

The SIU cheering section goes nuts. The team comes out and salutes the fans, and mingles with them for over 40 minutes after the game. It was surreal.

I took pictures of the scoreboard on my digital camera, and will post them later.

After interviews, I meet up with my friends Derrick and Jim. Derrick is a doctoral student at IU so we stayed with him overnight. We went to Mother Bear pizza, which was amazing. We walked around Bloomington, taking in the nightlife of the city. Its a nice town. We went home and played some college football, but I fell asleep. Remember, three hours of sleep.

Today, Jim and I drove back to C-Dale. Followed the Seahawk game online. They won, but it again wasn’t that pretty. Oh well, we’re 2-0. Bring on the Giants.

Big week this week, and I’m going down to Atlanta. Should be fun.

Catch you on the flipside,

Alan
