Obscure lyrics…FTW!
Currently, I’m listening to Dire Straits, a band that I believe is one of the most underrated of all time. I listen to this CD (Sultans of Swings: The Very Best of Dire Straits) and every song is beautiful. Absolutley beautiful. Three in particular stand out: Romeo and Juliet, Tunnel of Love, and Brothers in Arms. Brothers in Arms might possibly be the most beautiful rock song I’ve ever heard.
As you probably know, I am a member of Phi Mu Alpha, also known as a Sinfonian. My brothers and I are brought together by our common love of music, and as of late I’ve realized how much more I love music. I don’t just like playing, I don’t just like listening to it, I enjoy living through it. Though I haven’t touched my horn in a year and a half, I still feel I can do this.
Music is almost undescribable for what it can do. Any emotion, any feeling you can possibly come up with, somewhere in the world there is a song that sums up everything you’ve ever wanted to say. There’s a song about how you feel about your job, there’s a song about being far away from home, there’s a song lyric that explains how you feel about her.
One of the upsides (or downsides, depending on where my ind takes me) of a 12-credit semester is you get a lot of time to think. For the first time in a while I’ve thought about how much I love music and what it means to me. So often I think we take it for granted. But, how many times have you been in your car and a song comes on and it just fits? How many times do you dig through your CD collection searching for that one disc that you haven’t played in months because there’s one song on there that you have to listen to right now?
You wonder what seperates man from the rest of the animals? How about the fact that we have a method where five guys from England who have never even heard of you can help you feel better during your low points? Maybe its the power of language, but I think its the musical touch that makes it special.
The liner notes of this CD talk about the song Romeo and Juliet. The author writes (and I’m paraphrasing, because I can’t find the CD) Romeo gives out the cheapest pick-up line, “You and me babe, how about it?” Yet, with the accompanying insturments, it almost sounds inviting.
That’s what music does. The lyrics themselves aren’t great works of literature. But, along with guitars, pianos, horns, and drums they help tell the story of our life.
Whether the musicians know it or not.
Now I dreamed your dream for you, and now your dream is real,
Alan
I agree. Music does move the soul. I think one of the things that has made being over here so easy is the music I have. Music brings back memories and always seems to touch the right emotion. I honestly don’t know what I would do without it. And there has never been a truer sentence than, “there’s a song lyric that explains how you feel about her,” because there is and there always will be.
Sweet post. Although I haven’t had the serious immersion with Dire Straits that you have, I agree that the songs of theirs I’ve heard (Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet) are indeed very satisfying songs. I suppose I’d have to agree that music is very important to me, and I really would have trouble doing without it. I guess that’s one reason why my library has over 7000 songs.
I’m sick. I’m tired. I have a lot of schoolwork to do. I have no motivation to do any of it. Yet Stevie Ray Vaughn is making me feel better than any cup of coffee ever could.
While I agree, music is a great and powerful, moving thing/experience. Let’s get to the really important stuff. The Picks. Cougs are getting 8.5 on Saturday…Your thoughts.
