Football picks 10-28

Exciting news upcoming about Australia. But, that will porbably be here on Sunday. This time, is of course, for football picks. So, what you probably want to know about will have to wait. What I feel like writing about is now.

SIU at Missouri State

After playing poorly two weeks in a row, and then having coack Kill go through another seizure the Saluki season is at a cross roads. They can lean on one another make it through this and possibly qualify for the post season, or they can falter. 3 conference losses will not get SIU into the playoffs. Considering that Norhtern Iowa and Youngstown State remain on the schedule, its going to be tough.

Southern can win this game but they have to play as a team. The offense has to move the ball to keep the defense off the field, and the defense has to force short possessions from MSU to allow the offense to get into a rythym. This team aspect has been missing the last two weeks, and as a result the team lost both games.

Its been a good week of practice for the Salukis. I think it will translate to a win on Saturday. The season is on the line every week from here on out.

SIU 34-MSU 20

WSU at UCLA

Still waiting for four quarters of solid football from the Cougs. Even with the upset of Oregon (called by me, if you care to scroll down) the Cougs gave up 20 points in the 4th quarter to make things interesting.

UCLA meanwhile comes into this contest after blowing a game to Notre Dame. One would think the Bruins aren’t going to be happy. Their offense can make things happen, and WSU’s defense has been prone to giving up the big play. I’ll take the Hollywood Phonies.

UCLA 23-WSU20

(Rankings gloating note: The Cougs are ranked 25th in the BCS Poll according to pac-10.com. This means pretty much jack (only top 12 are guranteed of anything) but it was surprising to see)
UW vs Arizona State

The Sun Devils have struggled, posting a 1-3 mark in the Pac-10. To their credit the losses were to USC, Cal, and Oregon (the win came over Stanford). At 4-3, the Devils hit an easy part of their schedule coming up. ASU lost to 3 teams that they probably would have lost to anyway, they just had to play them first, and their record does not indicate how good they might be.

For the Huskies, Carl Bonnell looked real good in last week’s loss to Cal. The question is, can he sustain it this week?

It might not matter. I think ASU is slightly better than that 4-3 record indicates, and I’ll take them to beat the Huskies.

ASU 24-UW 10

Seahawks at Kansas City

This could be the back-up bowl. Seneca Wallace heads into Arrowhead for his first career start. The Chiefs might counter with…Brodie Croyle, rookie out of Alabama!

I hate injuries, but when I read that Damon Huard might not play this week, I perked up a tad. I kno, I’m a terrible person.

Croyle is not a bad QB, and KC thinks he’ll be the QB of the future. But, he won’t have the same number of reps with the first team offense as Seneca will have gotten in Seattle. Plus, Seneca got game experience last week.

THis is a game time decision of who the Chiefs will play at QB, but even if Huard does play, he won’t be as mobile.

And yes, I just talked myself into believing the Seahawks can win AT Arrowhead Stadium with a back-up qb. (Seahawk fans know that this building has been very unkind to Seattle in the past)

Seahawks 21-Chiefs 13

(Hey, I was right about the Cougar-Oregon game, right?)

Enjoy the games,

Alan

Cougs are running the table. Offense is clicking and the defense steps up when needed. Wish is all that can really be asked, since the D-line has been nearly whipped out by injures. Did you see they had to run a 3-4 D the entire game, because they don’t have enough lineman healthy?

    Good times in Cougarville.

Side note, UW is down to their 3rd string QB in DuRocher, a former Oregon washout.
