Football Picks 11-3

Time to pick some games.

SIU @ Youngstown State

Thanks to a crazy week in the gateway last week, a win by the Salukis puts them right in the thick of things for a conference title.

The problem is, Youngstown State has this running back that is awesome at everything. He’s rushed for over 1,200 yards and has scored 17 touchdowns. Our rushing defense is…not so good? Yeah, that seems like a good way to say it. I think it’ll be a shootout in Eastern Ohio (making that the least exciting sports sentence ever…well, other than Mariners, Royals, coming up next!) but, I think that YSU will control the clock and wear out our defense.

I forgot to mention this: YSU is nicknamed the Penguins. Yes, this is awesome. Its one of those nicknames that I love…here’s a top 10.

10. Knicks. Come on, they’re pants!
9. Penguins. Because nothing says intimidation like a penguin.
8. Banana Slugs. No comment.
7. Pretzels. Delicious
6. Cheesemakers. Ditto.
5. Salukis. For shameless homerism purposes only.
4. Kangaroos. Kanga and little Roo.
3. Tartans. For making fun of Scott purposes only.
2. Nimrods. Responsilbe for a great ESPN ad campaign.
1. Geoducks. Because, as Ivar’s says, “Keep Clam.”

Anyway…YSU 38-SIU35

WSU vs Arizona

Washington State is 6-3. Those three losses? At 4th ranked, at 3rd ranked USC, and against 10th ranked Cal. Those rankings have since changed (Auburn is 6, USC 9, and Cal 11) but when the Cougars suffered their three losses, they were to top 10 teams. No wonder the Cougs are ranked 25th in the AP and 23rd in the BCS. Those are quality losses.

This Cougar team is good, and still a little under the radar. They’ve made a believer out of me, and I think they’ll get a chance to move up in those rankings this week.

WSU 24-Arizona 10

UW at Oregon

Oregon at home in their first Pac-10 game since losing to WSU. I fail to see how this can end well for the Huskies. Washington’s played two close games the past few weeks, but Auzten is just one of those places that teams like Washington won’t do well in.

Oregon 35-UW17

Seahawks vs Oakland
Monday Night Football! After a two week losing streak, the Raiders should be a welcome sight. BUT, they’ve won two in a row, which is just enough to make me nervous, especially with Seneca Wallace manning the offense with his trusty sidekick Maurice “Fumbleitis” Morris.

If the Seahawks can keep hold of the ball, they’ll be fine. This, of course, is a key to every football game ever played, but when the offense isn’t clicking quite yet, it becomes more important.

One thing that makes me like this match-up: Seneca’s pump fake last week that got the entire Chiefs secondary to bite, then hitting a wide open (and thats an understatement) Derrel Jackson for a touchdown. I mean, D-Jac could have fair caught the ball he was so open.

Monday could be fun…(ducks lightning bolt, knocks on wood)

Seahawks 28-Raiders 10

Raider fans thrown out of Qwest Field for being drunk a-holes: 25.

AH, its good to have the old AFC West Rival back!

Enjoy the games,

Alan
