So, I went home for a week. I saw lots of people, ate lots of food, and even ran/walked/somehow maneuvered my way through a half marathon. So…let the randomness begin.

Since I last left you, the Cougars were done winning he Apple Cup (whee!) and I was getting ready to embark on a week of good ‘ol fashioned “not being in Salem”. The adventure starts with getting the cat to the vet/animal boarding place. Getting him in the carrier is no problem, its the riding in the car thing that he despises. The cat is very vocal about things he despises. That said he was put up at the kennel, not looking to pleased.

I drove off into the sunset (at 9:30 am) and did the Metro thing again to the airport. However his time, this did not come back to make my life Hellish. It worked out fairly well. I didn’t have to pay for parking, did not have to deal with St. Louis drivers, and overall had a good time completing a Sudoku puzzle on my way to the airport.

The trip home was fairly uneventful. There was the seeing of people, the eating of food, and the playing of soccer where I pretended to be Newcastle United against my oldest nephew. True to form, I lost the “match”.

Adding to the bonus fun time of the trip home was that I found my Left Hand Smoke CD, which I had left there the last time. So, I listened to that lots. It was fun to hear it again. Plus, I still knew all the words, so I could sing loudly and off key.

On Sunday, my brother, sister, dad and I ran the Seattle half marathon. I felt I was doing fairly well until about mile 10. Thats when I was decidedly not doing so well. I hit a wall, due in part to a gap in training (thanks, foot tendonitis!) and some hills (we don’t have those here). Dad walked with me to the finish and I got my medal, which I deem “the ultimate shiny thing”. I hope to run another half soon, but this time actually run the whole thing without my legs deciding to bail.

Let’s see… saw a bunch of people too. I even got some wine out of the deal! (Thanks, Ike!) There was always some sort of beverage when meeting with people, wheter it was TK, coffee, or tea (had with Mongolian grill food) merry times were had by all.

One beverage that I had by my lonesome was an amazing beer by the name of Dragonsooth Stout by Elysian Brewery. It came in a pint bottle and was amazingly delicious. Possibly the smoothest oatmeal stout I’ve ever had. I drank that while watching the lake at night, taking in the calmness.

That’s pretty much the week in a nutshell. I’m back in Salem and all that it entails. I am back and plotting things, possibly of writing nature, since I did not touch my notebook while on vacation, but came up with several lines that merited writing down. I’ll keep you posted about that plotting and whatever else I might have up my sleeve….

I’ll be educated well, learn about delicacy
I’ll be wearing pin stripes that say Renaissance is me
“Why, you’re amazing!”
Someday you’ll say to me,

Alan
